Deflection Specialist

HOURS:

Full Time (39 hours per week)

SALARY & BENEFITS :

$37.70 - $49.00 per hour.Complete package of fringe benefits including Vacation and Sick Leave, Health Insurance, 17 paid Holidays, and CalPERS Retirement. Travel allowance for field work.

JOB SYNOPSIS & QUALIFICATIONS SUMMARY :

Under general supervision, the Deflection Specialist facilitates the provision of services and supports to consumers involved with the criminal justice system; supports case management staff in their interactions with criminal justice personnel; facilitates deflection from short term correctional facilities and placement in State Developmental Centers; develops protocols and education for consumer advocacy in the criminal justice system. This position Assists the Regional Center Counsel with consultation and representation of consumer-related interagency issues, State Developmental Center commitments, conservatorships, and consumers rights issues; Identifies consumers who have been charged with crimes and assists case management staff with securing and coordinating services to reduce future likelihood of law enforcement contact. Interacts with the judicial system and/or law enforcement regarding diversion plans, appears in court as needed and works with probation and parole departments in connection with pre-release planning, follow-up, and deflection from more restrictive placements. Coordinates reports and documents requested by the courts. May be assigned special projects as needed and other duties as assigned.

Requires Knowledge of statutes and regulations pertaining to criminal and civil procedure, conservatorship, diversion, and commitment to a State Developmental Centers. Community resources, including law enforcement agencies, courts, probation and parole departments, and advocacy services. Criminal law, court proceedings, and development of sentencing and placement recommendations. The position requires extensive travel in the nine-county service area, the potential for travel throughout California to appear in other county courts or visit state-operated facilities, and knowledge of the judicial system and State Developmental Centers. A valid California Drivers license and a satisfactory driving record, possession of or access to an insured vehicle. The ability to tolerate encounters with potentially hostile and aggressive individuals.

Masters Degree in Social Work, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement or a closely related field and two years of experience at a level equivalent to a Service Coordinator with Far Northern Regional Center; or three years of experience as a Service Coordinator with Far Northern Regional Center or a like position. Paralegal certification and experience in addressing issues relevant to the developmentally disabled community preferred. Experience may substitute for education.
